EMERITUS

Fulfilling Dreams and Expectations

A Life Lesson Series

“Now that I’ve sold the business, what will replace the fun of the hunt?”

“I’m still working… for someone else now. What am I waiting for?”

“This ‘leisure’ may kill me, what do I do with it?”

“My spouse seems busy all the time. Why do I feel bored?”

Sound familiar? Ever had some of these questions in your mind, or others that seem just as uncomfortable? Why is it that, at this point in your life, after you’ve realized the economic fruits of so many years of your labor and have the resources, time, and energy to do so much, you still feel that something’s missing? Does the word ‘retirement’ sound like something your father experienced, but not something you expected for yourself?

— EMERITUS

An Association of Former Business Owners and Executives

Overview

The Emeritus Group is an association of former business owners and executives who share one important common attribute-each has sold his or her interest in the business, private or public, and is experiencing life as a “cashed out” owner. Some are still working… for the buyer. Others have responded by buying another business. Some are trying to fish, golf, travel, and read. All are looking for balance, excitement, relaxation, challenge, relationships, and meaning.

Membership

Emeritus is open to any individual who has sold his or her interest in a business, and who is interested in exploring the opportunities available in this phase of life, through new relationships and experiences. Emeritus establishes local chapters with membership up to 15 individuals. Each chapter interviews prospective members and participation is by invitation. All chapters are facilitated by a full time coach, and staffed by the national office of Emeritus Group, operated under Institute for Family Enterprise.

Program and Activities

The goal of each Emeritus chapter is to introduce interesting and challenging ideas, projects, skills, and opportunities to its members. Stimulation and concept for new opportunities comes from members, the chapter coach and possibly special guests who are invited to share their ideas with the chapter. Chapters meet quarterly, for one and two-day retreats, usually in destination resorts that offer relaxation, fun, and inspiration. Spouses are invited, and encouraged to come, since retirement is a family affair, and much of the dynamic in the post-sale life is a function of the new status of the former business owner and spouse. Programs depend on the interests of each chapter, but typically include ideas, skills, and experiences in:

    • Managing new wealth
    • Developing new intellectual interests and challenges
    • Refocusing on parenting to children and grandchildren
    • Establishing and running a family foundation
    • Participating on the boards of non-profit organizations
    • Creating new hobbies, personal talents, and life skills
    • Learning how to enjoy leisure when no longer a ‘five minute manager’
